A town nearby
Stanford
Victorian cottages on the Klein River, a spring bloom and a Saturday market.
50 minutes from the estate
One long street of Victorian cottages beside the Klein River, and almost nothing has been allowed to change. It is the antidote to Hermanus in season: no traffic, no queue, and a river you can go up in a boat.
How it got here
Laid out in 1857 on the farm of Sir Robert Stanford. The village core is heritage-protected, which is why the street still looks like the photographs of it.
What to do there
- The Saturday morning market on the village green
- Klein River Cheese, on the road in, where they make it
- A boat up the Klein River — the birding on the reed beds is the reason to go
Worth knowing
- It is a village, not a town — most of it closes early
- The drive out along the R326 is as good as the destination
