A town nearby
De Kelders
Cliffs above Walker Bay, sea caves underneath, and whales close in.
55 minutes from the estate
A clifftop village on the far side of Walker Bay from Hermanus, looking straight back across it. The whales come in under the cliffs, and there are caves in the rock below the village that people were living in a very long time ago.
How it got here
Klipgat Cave holds evidence of human occupation going back tens of thousands of years — some of the earliest anywhere for modern humans. The freshwater cave the village is named for is just along the cliff.
What to do there
- The cliff path towards Gansbaai, for whales without a boat
- Klipgat Cave, down the steps in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve
- Drip Kelder, the freshwater cave in the cliff
Worth knowing
- The reserve charges a small entry fee and the steps down are steep
- Whales are here June to December, same as Hermanus
