A town nearby
Bot River
The village at the top of the road, and a wine ward with no pretension in it.
10 minutes from the estate
A single street, a hotel bar, and a handful of cellars that between them have built one of the least self-important wine wards in the country. It is the closest village to the estate after Kleinmond and almost nobody stops.
How it got here
It grew up where the wagon road crossed the Bot River, which is where the name comes from. Wine here is recent — the ward was only formally recognised in the 2000s — but the farms are old.
What to do there
- Taste at the cellars along the R43 — most are small and most are family-run
- The Bot River Hotel bar, which is the social centre of the village
- Carry on to the estuary, which is the largest in the Western Cape
Worth knowing
- Several cellars open by appointment only — telephone before you drive
