Gansbaai

A town nearby

Gansbaai

Kleinbaai harbour, and the great whites that made it famous.

1 hour from the estate

A working fishing town that became the shark capital of the world more or less by accident, because of what lives in the channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock a few kilometres offshore.

How it got here

The Birkenhead went down off Danger Point in 1852. The soldiers stood on deck and held their ranks while the women and children were put into the boats — that is where the rule 'women and children first' comes from, and it is called the Birkenhead Drill because of it.

What to do there

  • Kleinbaai harbour, where the boats go out from
  • Danger Point lighthouse and the Birkenhead memorial
  • The cliff walk between Gansbaai and De Kelders, for whales close in

Worth knowing

  • Shark Alley is the channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock — seals on one side, sharks in between
  • Dyer Island carries one of the largest African penguin colonies left
