A town nearby
Kleinmond
The nearest village — a working harbour, a long beach, and the lagoon.
10 minutes from the estate
The closest town to the estate and the least changed. A small working harbour, a beach that runs for miles, and the Palmiet River coming down into the sea beside it. It sits inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which is the reason the mountains behind it look the way they do.
How it got here
A fishing settlement that grew up around the mouth of the Palmiet — 'klein mond' is Afrikaans for 'small mouth'. It stayed a fishing village long after Hermanus stopped being one.
What to do there
- The harbour, early, when the boats come in
- The beach and the Palmiet river mouth, where the water runs brown with fynbos tannin
- Look for the wild horses on the Bot River estuary — they have been there for generations
- Drive the R44 west towards Gordon's Bay, which is the good part
Worth knowing
- The Kogelberg holds the densest concentration of fynbos species on earth — more plant species per hectare than the Amazon
- It is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the core area needs a permit
