Rooi Els
The end of Clarence Drive, and the best place in the country to see a rockjumper.
35 minutes from the estate
A hamlet where the mountain comes down to the sea at the far end of Clarence Drive. Birders come from everywhere for the Cape rockjumper, which is found nowhere but these mountains and is easier to see here than anywhere else.
What to do there
- Walk the gravel track along the contour from the end of the village
- Look for Cape rockjumper, Cape siskin and ground woodpecker
- Whales in the bay below, in season
Worth knowing
- Take the track slowly and quietly — the birds are there, they are just small
- There are no shops. Bring water
