Betty's Bay
Harold Porter's garden, the disa kloof waterfall, and the penguins at Stony Point.
25 minutes from the estate
A scatter of houses between the mountains and the sea, with two things in it worth the drive on their own: a botanical garden that runs up into a kloof with a waterfall at the top, and one of only a handful of mainland breeding colonies of African penguins.
How it got here
Named after Betty Youlden, the daughter of the man who tried to sell the plots here in the 1930s. Stony Point was a whaling station before it was a penguin colony — the concrete foundations are still on the rocks among the birds.
What to do there
- Harold Porter National Botanical Garden — two hundred hectares of fynbos with paths into the mountain
- Walk up Disa Kloof to the waterfall
- Stony Point, for the penguins, the cormorants and the rock hyrax
Worth knowing
- The red disas flower in the kloof in January and February and are the reason people come then
- Both the garden and the penguin colony charge a small conservation entry fee
