The whale crier
The only one in the world. He blows a kelp horn when the whales come in.
35 minutes from the estate
Hermanus employs a whale crier, and no other town on earth does. He walks the cliff path in season and sounds a kelp horn in a code that tells you where the whales are — one pattern for the Old Harbour, another for Roman Rock, another for Sievers Point. It costs nothing to follow him.
What to do there
- Find him on the cliff path between the Old Harbour and Gearing's Point
- Ask him to explain the code before you walk off — it is the whole point
- Then walk in the direction he has just called
Worth knowing
- In season only — roughly June to December
- He is a town employee, not a busker. There is nothing to pay
