The Rooi Els birding track
Birders fly from Europe for the Cape rockjumper. This is where you see it.
35 minutes from the estate
A gravel contour track along the mountainside at the end of Clarence Drive. The Cape rockjumper lives nowhere on earth but these mountains, and this is the easiest place to find one — which is why people who take birds seriously plan trips around it. It costs nothing and takes an hour.
What to do there
- Park at the end of the village and walk the contour track slowly
- Cape rockjumper, Cape siskin, ground woodpecker, Victorin's warbler
- Whales in the bay below, in season, while you are looking up
Worth knowing
- Slowly and quietly. The birds are there — they are just small and quick
- No shops, no water, no shade. Take your own
