Clarence Drive
The R44 from Gordon's Bay to Rooi Els — one of the great coastal roads.
20 minutes to the start from the estate
Cut into the cliff between the mountain and the sea, with the whole of False Bay open on your right. It is thirty kilometres and it costs nothing but the petrol. Drive it slowly, and drive it late in the afternoon with the light behind you.
What to do there
- Stop at the viewpoints — there are several, and they are all worth it
- Look for whales in the bay below between June and November
- Carry on to Rooi Els and walk out towards the point
Worth knowing
- Baboons are on this road. Keep food out of sight and do not feed them, ever
- It is narrow and it bends — this is not a road to hurry
