Bientang's Cave

A table worth the drive

Bientang's Cave

Lunch in a cave in the Hermanus cliff, with the whales in front of you.

35 minutes from the estate

Built into a cave in the cliff face below the Hermanus cliff path, at sea level, with the water breaking under the deck. In season the whales are in the bay in front of you while you eat, which is not a thing many restaurants can offer.

How it got here

The cave is named for Bientang, said to have been among the last of the Khoi people living on this stretch of coast, who sheltered here. It has been a restaurant since the 1980s.

What to do there

  • Lunch on the deck, as close to the water as it looks
  • Walk the cliff path afterwards — it runs directly past the steps
  • Whales, from June to December, without a boat

Worth knowing

  • It is down a flight of steps cut into the cliff
  • Book for whale season. It is the most sought-after table in Hermanus
