A table worth the drive
Beaumont Wines
An old werf and a working water mill, ten minutes past Bot River.
20 minutes from the estate
An old werf ten minutes past Bot River, with a water mill that still turns and a cellar in buildings far older than the wine industry around them. Unhurried, unpolished, and the closest serious cellar to the estate.
How it got here
The farm is Compagnes Drift, a wagon outspan and a mill on the road east long before anyone planted a vine on it. The Beaumont family bought it in 1974 and began making wine in the old buildings; a second generation makes it now.
What to do there
- Taste in the old cellar rather than a tasting room
- The water mill and the werf buildings
- Ask for the chenin blanc — it is what the farm is known for
Worth knowing
- Twenty minutes from the estate, which makes it the easy one
- Small operation. Telephone before you drive out
